The Awakening of Endymion and the Fall of Moon Kingdom

*this is my own version of the sequel of Endymion's story. This was submitted in compliance with our class requirement for Mythology Summer 2013

Endymion stayed there perpetually asleep on a cave on Karian Mount Latmus. Indeed, he never grew old nor died. He remained young and handsome. From time to time, Selene, his lover, frequently visited him in his dreams. Hence, his dreams became his reality with only Selene in it.

A hundred of years later, a mortal maiden travelling through the mountains saw the peacefully sleeping Endymion lying on a flat rock inside a cave. She strode to his side, and enchanted by his beauty, instantly fell in love with him. She wondered what made him sleep so calmly there and miss the beauty of nature just outside the cave. She thought that maybe he was also a traveler, like her, who became very tired after a long trek.

She sat beside him and patiently waited for him to be awakened. Days and nights had passed already, yet he did not open his eyes, even once. This made the maiden to worry a lot. She considered the idea that perhaps that beautiful stranger was already dead. She did not want to think about it though, because she wanted to know the name of that stranger first. Her hopes went high when she heard his pulses beating beneath his skin.

The sight of the maiden sitting beside the body of Endymion for how many days and nights outraged Selene. It made her jealous a lot. Earthquakes, caused by lunar magnetic forces, then shook the earth. Rocks inside the cave were falling and moving and rolling everywhere. The sudden earthquake frightened the maiden very much that she cannot help but to hug the body of the stranger. She had this strong want to protect his body by her body from any falling debris from the cave’s ceiling.

After few minutes, the earth became still… and silent. She felt pain all over her body caused by the impact of rocks falling on her while she covered the body of the stranger, who at that moment, was still sleeping serenely. She stood and gazed at the handsome man sleeping in front of her. Trembling at his radiant and calm beauty, she fell on her knees, and woke him with a kiss.

Her love for him was overwhelming that she started speaking to him words full of love, unaware that the man was already awake and he heard every word she said. When the maiden stopped talking and started weeping heavily, Endymion caressed her hair, to the maiden’s surprise. “Who are you?” the maiden asked. Her eyes full of tears.

He smiled, managed himself to sit up and held the maiden’s hand, “I am Endymion.”

Endymion, astounded by the beauty of the maiden, cannot resist but to kiss those tears away from the maiden’s cheeks. All along, Endymion thought that the maiden was Selene who kept on visiting him on his dreams and turned herself into a mortal too. He loved the maiden so much from the moment he opened his eyes and saw her figure beside him and heard her sobs.

With too much anger triggered by the scene happening before her, Selene appeared right in the front of Endymion and the maiden, who were obviously shocked by the bright light that almost blinded them. Selene then confronted the maiden and Endymion. On the height of the heated confrontation, Selene accidentally killed Endymion while he was trying to protect the maiden. Heartbroken, Selene destroyed the Moon Kingdom knowing that she would not be able to rule the kingdom without Endymion. The Moon Kingdom had fallen and was destroyed… and so was Selene.
